The Alrunes are mythical sorceresses (click for image).
In ancient Germany they were believed to be the mothers of the Huns. In ancient Norway, Alrunes were believed to have practiced metamorphosis, changing into all sorts of shapes without changing their sex.
These mysterious female creatures were highly feared and respected. The Germans gave the name to little statues, about a foot high. To them the people attributed great virtue and honored them. The statues were richly clothed, given comfortable housing, and served food and drink at every meal. It was believed that if the images were neglected they would bring severe misfortune upon the household.
